Information
The Reading Learning Center is a unique center that helps students learn to read and write. Starting with Pre-Kindergarten through adult years, my goal is to ensure that my students become capable, confident readers who understand sound/symbol relationships, gain meaning from print, comprehend a varety of literary genres, and acquire an appreciation and love of reading and writing. Children often require a strong skills program in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, structural analysis, vocabulary development, and comprehension strategies. I provide opportunities for children to apply these skills by reading connected text that matches their developmental reading levels. I will plan a personalized program based on a student’s background knowledge and experience, strengths and assessed needs. I also provide programs in study skills and test preparation, and vocabulary development for the new SAT. Since I am a member of the National Writing Project and the Philadelphia Writing Project, I love to teach writing. I use many different approaches so that a student can successfully write an expository, narrative, informal or descriptive piece of writing. I want my students to enjoy the craft. All programs are aligned with the Pennsylvania Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and for English Language Arts, which include reading, grammar, writing, speaking and listening. We have a new KinderPrep program that provides foundational skills for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children.
The materials that we use include:
